What is a dental implant?

To replace missing teeth, many patients today choose dental implants. Each implant features a small, biocompatible post that acts as a replacement tooth root. The posts can anchor individual crowns or a bridge, partial, or denture. Only a few dental offices in our area provide placement of dental implants as well as restoration in the same location. Dr. Paul S. Miller has been providing implant services for over 30 years in Fort Lee and is on the leading edge of the dental implant technology.

What’s involved in an implant procedure?

First, you’ll undergo a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that your oral health and bone density are sufficient for successful implant placement. We’ll schedule your surgery, which will occur onsite in our office, and the dentist will secure implant posts into the sockets left by your missing teeth. You’ll wear temporary teeth until the surgical site heals. After bone naturally fuses with the posts, the dentist will affix your permanent crowns or attach your bridge, denture, or partial.

What is a Mini Dental Implant?

Patients who do not have sufficient bone density for traditional implants can opt for Mini Dental Implants. Also called MDIs, these prosthetics can be placed into the jaw in one visit. Each MDI post is like a tiny screw, so traditional cut-and-sew surgery is not required. A few Mini Dental Implants can secure a denture to eliminate slippage and looseness. If you struggle with ill-fitting dentures, talk with your dentist about MDIs.

How long do implants last?

With proper care, implant posts can last a lifetime. The restorations secured to dental implant posts may need replacement over time. Because each patient is different, we cannot accurately determine how long your crown, bridge, partial, or denture may last. To improve longevity, attend regular dental checkups and cleanings, brush and floss your teeth daily, and promptly follow through with restorative dental work.
